Dozens of American flags prepared for Donald Trump's unprecedented second state visit to the UK in September had to be replaced because their red bands had been an incorrect tone of red, according to a official contractor.
Expensive Flag Replacement
The replacement of sixty-six handcrafted flags originally intended for use along the Mall and at Windsor Castle allegedly amounted to around fifty-two thousand eight hundred pounds in taxpayer money.
"The Americans determined that the red we use, called R01, wasn't right for them, and that they wanted a cherry red instead, so we had to purchase all new flags for this visit," explained the head of the Flag Consultancy.
Shade Discrepancy Among Flags
The change resulted in the stars and stripes displaying a brighter hue of red than the British flags flown alongside them.
"Their red is now stronger than the red on the British banner," the official commented. "Before a official tour, we have to provide samples and go to the embassies in London to get approval. Countries find it insulting if we get our colors wrong."
Potential Reason for Shade Problem
The contractor suggested that a sample flag shown to the embassy might have discolored somewhat due to exposure from earlier deployments, such as during the president's initial official tour in 2019.
"One part of their flag is red. And the one we had in our inventory was closer to a dull reddish-brown, and let's just say they were unhappy. That's the issue with flags that are not commonly flown: it is our understanding versus their perspective," he continued.
The US embassy has declined to respond on the situation.
Broader Context of the Tour
The situation underscores the extent to which Trump was accommodated during his historic return trip to the UK. The invitation for the tour came in a handwritten letter delivered during the UK leader's first meeting with the US leader at the White House in last winter.
During the multi-day British tour, the American leader was hosted by King Charles and additional representatives of the royal family. Security measures included transporting him around the estate of Windsor Castle to avoid demonstrators.
The visiting leader described the visit as "truly one of the greatest privileges of my career."
A government spokesperson defended the tour, saying: "The significant US official tour brought record-breaking investment into the UK of £150bn – boosting employment and accelerating growth."
