PM Mette Frederiksen of Denmark officially commenced the summit while flanked by Council President António Costa and Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“For the last few months, there has been much talk about peace in Ukraine, with meetings, pre-meetings and briefings about the meetings, as Russia maintains its aggressive offensives.”
“It must be clear to everyone now: Russia will not stop until they are forced to do so.”
She added that “a significant challenge confronts us: Europe requires fortification to prevent military aggression, and this must happen immediately.”
EU Officials Voice Defense Concerns
Several European representatives voiced parallel security apprehensions throughout the conference. Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy alerted that “recent drone incidents across Europe are a clear sign that Moscow remains confident to intensify hostilities.”
The Ukrainian leader underscored that “should Russian forces deploy drones targeting Poland or violate the airspace of northern European countries, it means this can happen anywhere.”
UK PM Strengthens Defense Statement
British leader Keir Starmer pointed out Russian ongoing offensives, stating: “We've seen in recent weeks the appetite that Putin has to not only rain down on Ukraine, plus conducting operations across European nations.”
“They are unrelenting, demonstrating ongoing commitment, necessitating full-scale resistance.”
Divergent Viewpoints Among European Leaders
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán presented an alternative viewpoint, inquiring: “Why does Moscow intimidate Europe? We are stronger than they are.”
The Hungarian leader detailed: “Examine comparative data for factual assessment. European population exceeds 400 million, Russian population approximates 130 million. EU gross domestic product vastly outperforms Moscow's.”
Ireland's Prime Minister Cautions Against Naivety
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin emphasized “certain innocence within Ireland regarding this situation.”
“A clear pattern is emerging, considering recent weekly and monthly events, in terms of drone incursions, in terms of maritime activity around cables.”
The Irish leader ended by observing that “Moscow exhibits no indications of conflict termination regardless of diplomatic efforts and international conferences.”
Wider EU Security Collaboration
Alliance head Mark Rutte highlighted the crucial nature of European collaboration, stating that the EPC structure enables officials to convene collectively to establish direction.
The conference assembled more than 45 continental representatives to discuss security, migration and economic issues amid ongoing regional tensions.
