It has been 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie debuted, establishing the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared recently, providing a brief look into the plot but keeping fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Toys

The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (the star)?

Connections from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is remains the key figure among the group.
