On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an bold start to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
